 (3) Sayana makes no pretence on his own behalf of being in a position to determine authorita- tively the meaning and reference of the second line of this difficult verse. 81.
 Peterson of course does make a pretence of having understood the verse; but it appears that he has not really understood it. Had he undorstood it, he would certainly have given the translation of the whole verse, which he has not done.
 (4) Sayana's dilemma here is obvious. His desparate suggestion that erg may here be equal to as can be compared only with his explanation of विसीमहि. 84.
 But it is interesting to see what Peterson says some lines below-In particular all the authori- ties accept Sayana's explanation of अयुक्त. 84.
 Is it not an act of foolishness on the part of the authorities to accept Sayana's explanation when, in fact, it has been rejected and branded as des- parate by the learned professor of the celebrated Elphinstone college? But, by the bye, who are these pretended authorities? Is not Sayana an authority?
