कर्नल फेर यांस विषप्रयोग केल्याबद्दलची चौकशी. ( १६५) त्यावेळचे रेसिडेंट सर रिचमंड शेक्सपीयर यांनी तारीख १९ आक्टोबर सन १८५७ रोजी सरकारांस रिपोर्ट केला आहे त्यावरून असे दिसतें कीं, पाह- ल्याने अमदाबाद शहर लुटावें अणि नंतर बडोद्यावर चाल करून जाऊन त्यावेळ- च्या राजकर्त्या गायकवाडास (खंडेराव) पदच्यूत करावें असा त्या कारस्थान करणा- रांचा उद्देश होता. शेवटचा हेतू जर सिद्धीस गेला असता, तर त्याच्या पर्यवसांनीं जो कांही फायदा व्हावयाचा, तो मल्हारराव महाराज यांस झाला असता. त्या का रस्थानात मल्हारराव महाराज यांचा संबंध होता, असे त्या रिपोटर्टात जें कांहीं दुस- या कागदांतील वेंचे घेतले आहेत, त्यावरून व त्या रिपोर्ट्स जोडलेल्या कागदां- बरून सिद्ध झाले होते. परंतु रेसिडेंट साहेब यांनी मल्हारराव यांस जन्म वेडा आहे असे मानिलें होतें व अशा मोठ्या साहस कृत्यांची रचना करण्याची त्यांची शक्ति नाहीं, असें गृहीत केले होते. यामुळे त्या वेळेस त्यांचा बचाव झाला. आणि त्यांचें पाप उघडकीस आलें नाहीं. त्यानंतर सन १८६३ च्या साळांत खंडेराव महाराज यांच्या प्राणाची हानि कर- ण्याकरितां जें कारस्थान केलें होतें, त्यांत मुख्यत्वेंकरून मल्हारराव अग्रेसर होते. अ से जरी सिद्ध झालें, तरी कर्नल वालीस साहेब यांनी आपल्या पूर्वाधिकाऱ्यांचा कि- त्ता घेतला. त्यांनी त्यांस बुद्धीने अगदीं निर्बळ आणि त्यांच्या कृयाबद्दल पृच्छान ठरविलें. या कटांत मल्हारराव महाराज यांच्या दुष्कर्माांचे सोबती चार असामी होते. यांस धरलें, आणि अपराधी ठरवून पुष्कळ मुदतीच्या ठेपी दिल्या. व मल्हारराव म हाराज यांस ही ठेपीची कांहीं मर्यादा न करितां पादरा येथें प्रतिबंधांत ठेविलें, त्याब. द्दल रेसिडेंट साहेब यांनीं रिपोर्ट केला आहे, त्यावरून दिसून येईल कीं, जादू, वि ष आणि गोळी घालून मारणें या उपाय वयापैकी कोणत्या तरी एका उपायानें खंडे-
- “ On the 19th October 1857, Sir Richmond Shakespear, the then Resident
of Baroda, reported to Government that the object of this conspiracy embraced in the first instance the plander of the city of Ahmedabad, after which an advance to raise the coolies of the Kaira district on the banks of the Mahi shout Pretabpur &c, was to have been made, and afterwards an advance on Baroda, for the purpose of dethroning the then reigning Gaekwar Khunderao, was to complete the general design. Had the latter been effected the person who would have gained most by the transaction would have been the present Gaeckwar Mulhar Rao, whose personal participation in the plot was shown by the quotations from the official correspondence of that day as well as by the accompaniments of the report under reference. A perusal of the report in question will show that His Highness Mulhar Rao was mainly saved from exposure at the time, because Sir Richmond Shakespear believed him to be an idiot and unable to orgnize so extensive a conspiracy ; hence although he was distinctly proved a few years after to have been the prime mover in the re- newed conspiracy of 1863 against the life of his brother, he again escaped adequate punishment, because Colonel Walace, the Resident, adopting the opinion of His predecessor decribed Malhar Rao as “ intelectually feeble and apparently irrespon- sible for his actions."
