( ४१ ) सर माउंट् स्टुअर्ट् एलफिन्स्टन् साहेब यांनी महाराजांस अशी सला दिली होती कीं आपल्यास इंग्रज सरकारच्या सर्व प्रकारच्या मध्यस्थांतून मुक्त व्हावयाचें असल्यास त्यास एकच उपाय आहे, कीं आपण कर्जाची एकदम फेड करावी, अगर सावकार लोकांकडून इंग्रज सरकारच्या जामिनगिरीवरून हात उठविल्याबद्दलची कबु- लात देववावी. * सयाजीराव महाराज यांनी असा निश्चय केला की इंग्रज सरकारच्या जामिनगि- रीचे सर्व कर्ज एकदम देऊन टाकून या पंचांतून मुक्त व्हावें; आणि ही गोष्ट त्यांनी रेसिडेंट साहेब यांस तोंडाने व लेखी कळविली. या समयीं सर माउंट् स्टुअर्ट एलफि- न्स्टन् साहेबांच्या कारकीर्दीची अखेर होऊन त्यांच्या जागेवर सर जॉन मालकम आ- ले होते. हा फेरफार रोसिडेंट यांस अनुकूल झाला. त्यांनी व त्यांचे असिस्टंट् यांनी सयाजीराव यांजबरोबर कडक व जहालीम रीतीची वागणूक ठेवण्याविषयीं आप- ल्या सरकारास आणखी नेट लाविले. आणि तसें जर न केलें तर गुजराथेतील लोक असें समजतील, की गायकवाडास इंग्रज सरकारांनीं जामिनगिरीच्या बंधनांतून मुक्त केले. आणि त्या योगानें पुष्कळ बंडाळी होईल असें भय घातले. गोविंदराव गायकवाडाचा रेसिडेंट यांनी पक्ष स्वीकारिल्यामुळे बडोद्यांत मनस्वी धांदल उडाली होती. सर जान मालकम सन १८३० च्या साली आले होते तेव्हां त्यांच्या प्रचीतीस असें आलें कीं बडोद्याच्या राजाचे राजधानीत रोसडेंट चे राहणें सर्व खटपटीचें बीज आहे, सचत्र त्यांनीं रेसिडेंट यास बडोद्यांतून काढून त्याचें वसतिस्थान अमदाबाद ठरविलें, + आणि गोविंदराव गायकवाड यांची गैर चाल शाबीद झाल्यावरून त्यांस देखील बडोद्यांतून काढून दिलें. आणि राजधानींत शांतता केली. + "One plan can only release your Highness from all interference, which is the discharge of the whole of your debt or consent of the bankers to give up the guaran- tee."
