( ३= ) मल्हारराव महाराज गायकवाड यांचा खरा इतिहास. दर दिलें आहे. त्यांतील ताप असे आहे कीं तुझीं दिवाणास त्याच्या संरक्ष गासाठी जें कांहीं वचन दिले असेल तें राजाने इंग्रज सरकारास पसंत पडेल असा दिवाण निवडावा असें जें प्रसिद्ध वचन आपण त्यांस दिले आहे त्यास अनुलक्षून देतां येईल असेंच तुझीं दिले असेल.* मुंबई सरकार यांनी रेसिडेंटसाहेब यांची त्यांच्या दुराग्रहाबद्दल ज्या रीतीने कान उघड- 'णी केली पाहिजे होती त्या रीतीनें केली नाहीं. यामुळे यांनी आपला दुराग्रह शेवटा- स नेण्यास ज्यास्त हट्ट धरला. त्यांनी मुंबई सरकारात असा देखील दोष दिला की महाराजाविषय व त्यांच्या मसलतदाराविषयीं आपण उपेक्षा करिता. असे लिहिण्यांत रोसेडेंट यांनी बराच मर्यादातिक्रम केला असताही त्या मोठ्या मनाच्या गवरनरा- च्या क्षमासागर में मर्यादा सोडली नाहीं. त्यांनी रोसेडेंट साहेबांस असें लिहिलें कीं, तुझीं दिवाण यास व इजारदार लोकांस दिलेलीं वचनें महाराजाकडून पाळविलीं नाहींत, महाराजांच्या बदसलागार लोकांस महाराजांच्या सभोंवतीं राहूं दिलें, आणि ज्यांनी तु- मच्या वर्तणुकीवर टीका केली त्यास शासन केलें नाहीं अशी गहाणी सांगतां यास दिवाणाचे व इजारदार लोकांचे इंग्रजसरकार संरक्षण करील अशी त्यांनी अशा क- करावी अशा रितीने तुह्मी त्यांस दिलदिलासा दिला असेल अशी सरकार कल्पना करूं शकत नाहींत. कारण तुह्मांस चांगले माहित आहे की जी गोष्ट गायकवाडा- पासून करविण्याचा सरकारास हक्क नाहीं ती गोष्ट करविण्यास सरकार अगदी ना- खुष आहेत. जर तुह्मास वचन देणे जरूरीचें वाटलें होतें तर त्याबद्दल सरकारास अगोदर कळवावयाचें होतें. झणजे सरकारास त्यासंबंधी त्यांचा दृढ निश्चय काय आहे तो कळविण्याची संधी मिळाली असती. तुह्मीं वचने दिल्यामुळे पाहिजे तसा घोटाळा उत्पन्न झाला असोन त्यांतून तुह्मांस सोडविण्यासाठीं गवरनर साहेब आणि त्यांचे मंत्री आपल्या राजनीतीकडे व आपल्या मित्राच्या हक्काकडेस अलक्ष करून तुमची विनं- ती मान्य करूं शकत नाहींत. If, however, you had conceived that you were authorized by unforeseen circumstances to hold forth that expectation, so great a departure from an ordinary policy ought to have been reported without delay. An opportunity would then have been afforded for the Governor in Council to repeat his determination on this point. ** (Section 7)-But he cannot encourage the expectation that you are now to be relieved from the ill-consequences of the embarassments by a total change in the prin- ciples of the Government, and that the measures, which you consider yourself bound to support, are to be carried through by the Governor in Council with regard to his own policy or to the rights of the allies."
