८० शेस्पियरकृत - नाट्यमाला. जस् समा इन्जूरिया"(Summum jus, Summa injuria) ह्या तत्वाचा उपन्यास करून, 'दुष्ट व्यवहारा' मध्ये 'नयप्रचार" कसा असावा हे दाखविण्याचा यत्न कवीनें केला आहे. वरील तत्व हें पाश्चिमात्य देशांतील न्यायशास्त्रांतले असून, त्याचा अर्थ सामान्यतः असा आहे कीं, जो जो कायद्यांचा व नियमांचा कडकपणा अधिक, तों तों अन्यायाचा मात्र प्रादुर्भाव होऊन, तज्जन्य पीडा व नुकसानी सोसण्याची पाळी सर्वावर येते. प्रस्तुत नाटकांत या तत्वाचा केवळ उपन्यासच करून कवि थांबला नाहीं; तर त्याने आणखी असेंही दाखविलें आहे कीं, अशा अन्यायजन्य अर्थात अन्याय्य नुकसानींचा व लासाचा प्रतीकार करणे म्हणजे न्याय करणेंच होय, या तत्वाचा उपन्यास कवीनें कसा केला आहे, हें आतां पाहूं. प्रथमतः शायलॉक व अॅन्टो- नियो यांजमध्ये झालेल्या कर्जरोख्याचीच हकीगत घेऊ. शाय- ( मागील पानावरून चालु ) it to clination, and robs her of all participation in the choico of a husband, rests certainly upon paternal right; but even this right, when carried to an extreme, becomes the highest injustice. The injustice which lies in the en- forcement of this paternal right, would have fallen with tragical weight, if chance had not conducted a fortunate issue. The flight and marriage of Jessica, against her father's will, comprehends a manifest in- justice. Novertheless, who will condemn her for having "with drawn herself from the power of such a father ? in the sentence laid upon the Jew, by which he is compelled to recognise the marriage of his daughter, is a gain re- flected the precept --Summrum jus, Summa injuria. right and unright are here so closely driven up into the sane limit, that they are no longer separated, but im- mediately pass over one to the other.
