II. considering them somewhat unimportant to the English reader, and the translator of the present volume has adopted the same plan on the same grounds. When the same text occurs in more than one place, its version except for special reasons, is given always on the first occasion only, reference being made to that place in foot-notes on every succeeding occasion. In order to test the genuinness of the numerous texts in the original, the translator has actually taken the trouble of referring some of them to the works of authority from which they have been extracted, and has found to his deep satisfaction that they are correct. Some more circumstancial arguments, somewhat pertinent to the subject, having been sucgested by a worthy friend, room was made for them in the appendix. V. P. S. P. Bombay, January 1865.
