INTRODUCTION. PEOPLE have come to regard it as an established truth that the re-marriage of high caste Hindu widows has been strictly forbidden in the Kaliyuga by our venerable and farsighted Rishis of yore. This opinion though apparently true, is an insult to the pure and philanthropic character of our religion, and has been very successfully proved to be totally unfounded by Babu Eshwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a learned Bengalee Pandit, and the Principal of the Calcutta Sanscrit College, who has collected together several texts in his favour from reputable old authors of Smritis. The author has done thorough justice to the subject he has taken up, and has left not the slightest shadow of a doubt both as to the validity of the arguments adduced, and made to bear upon the subject, and the futility of the reasons against re-marriage. In performing the above duty, the author did not trust the correctness of his arguments merely because they satisfied his own mind,
