B.:--Some suggest that केदकश्लेष्मा mentioned in Sanskrit medical works corresponds to "Gastric juice' of English medical writers. Sanskrit medical writers such as सुश्रुत & चरक mention five kinds of श्रेष्मा (१) क्लेदकश्लेष्मा (gastric juice), (२) बोधकश्लेष्मा (Saliva), (३) श्लेषकश्लेष्मा ( joint oil), (४) अवलंबकश्लेष्मा) (श्लेष्मा residing in heart & lungs), and (५) तर्पकश्लेष्मा (श्लेष्मा residing in brain). We are not able just now to settle one English word for श्लेष्मा. Sometimes it is translated as 'mucus, ' and sometimes as ' phlegm.' We shall, however, discuss the word शष्मा hereafter under the English word - Mucus. Gate (gat) [ A.
