विण्याचे कामीं शक्य तितका प्रयत्न केला. परंतु ह्या प्रत्येकाच्या ब्रिटिश सरकाराविषयींच्या खऱ्या भक्तीमुळें त्यास यश न येऊन, तो हताश, झाला. ह्या त्रयीपैकीं एकाने जरी पेशव्यांचा पक्ष स्वीकारिला असता, तरी आह्मांस किती अडचणी प्राप्त झाल्या असत्या, त्याची कल्पना करवत नाहीं. तसें झालें असतें, तर ठाकूर लोक व जमीनदार लोक लगेच त्यांस मिळाले असते; आणि प्रत्येक गांव उघडपणें आमच्या विरुद्ध होऊन पदोपदीं आह्मांस विघ्न आलें असतें. शेवटी आमचा विजय झाला असता ह्याबद्दल कोणास शंका नाहीं; परंतु एतद्देशीय संस्थानिक आमच्या विरुद्ध होऊन पुष्कळ दिवसपर्यंत हिंदुस्थानांत एकसारखें युद्ध चाललें असतें, तर त्या योगानें युरोपखंडामध्यें देखील अनेक भानगडी उत्पन्न झाल्या असत्या; आणि आह्मांस जी नेटिव्ह सैन्याची फायदेशीर व महत्त्वाची मदत मिळाली, ती नाहींशी झाली असती१."

Had any one of these declared for the Peishwa, our difficulties would have been beyond conception; the smaller Thakoors and rural chiefs would have instantly joined the standard of their sovereign; every village would have been openly hostile ; and every impediment thrown in our way. That we should have ultimately conquered no one will doubt; but a protracted war in India, with native sovereigns against us, might have led to complications in Europe, and withdrawn from us that support from native mercenaries which has been so advantageous and important."
