All the parts of the poem are not equally sustained. At the same time I think nothing could be better than the description of Dhar and Ujjain in Part IV, the description of the Kalika fair in Part V, and the lamentations of Malhar Rao and his family on the death of Khandoji. The au- thor, who, I understand, is since dead, possessed no doubt genuine poetic powers and in recognition of the merits of his performance on the whole, I think, Rs. 200 should be awarded to him in recognition of the merits of his work. 14th June 1883, (Sd.) RANADE. भाषांतर. मी हैं काव्य समग्र व लक्ष्यपूर्वक वाचून पाहिलें आहे व चि- टणिसांनी ह्याचे गुणदोषांविषयीं जो अभिप्राय दिला आहे त्यास माझी पूर्ण संमती आहे. आता हे निर्विवाद आहे की, एखाद्या ऐतिहासिक पुरुषाचें अथपासून इतिपर्यंत सबंध चरित्र देणे हा विषयच मुळी काव्याचे सोईचा नव्हे. अशा प्रकारचें चरित्रठ- कठिकाणीं गद्याप्रमाणे केवळ निरूपणपर असल्यामुळे नीरस होणार. कारण नायकाचें चरित्र शुद्ध ऐतिहासिक तऱ्हेनें जसें घडलें असेल तसे लिहिणे ही एक गोष्ट होय, व त्याचें मनोरंजक काव्य करणे
