There can be no doubt that the biography of a hero, from his birth to his death, is not a very mana- geable subject for a poem. The narrative of a hero's life can not but be at times too prosaic to be in- teresting and the two objects of giving an historical account of the hero's life and making it an interesting poem are, to some extent, incompatible. The poet has to choose the more stirring incidents of the he- ro's life and pass over the common ones without notice. I cannot say that the author of this poem has exercised a wise choice in the selection of his in- cidents.
