केली आहेत. परंतु अहिल्याबाईंच्या विशाल कीर्तीच्या मानाने ही चरित्रे फारच अपर्ण संक्षिप्त आहेत, असें ह्मणणे भाग पडतें! खरोखर ह्या साध्वीचें विस्तृत व मनोरंजक चरित्र अस्सल कागदपत्रांच्या माहितीने प्रसिद्ध झाले, तर त्यास 'सद्गुणगाथा' असेंच नांव शो- भेल, ह्यांत शंका नाही. आहिल्याबाईसंबंधानें टॉरेन्स, म्यालेसन, वालबेझेन, सर लिपेल ग्रिफीन , वगैरे अनेक इंग्रज ग्रंथकारांनी फारच स्तुतिपर उद्गार काढिले आहेत, एवढेच नव्हे तर मिसेस 'जोना बेली' नामक एका आंग्लयुवतीने तिजवर एक इंग्रजी काव्यही रचिले आहे ! परंतु ह्या स्त्रीचे विस्तृत चरित्र प्रसिद्ध करण्याची इच्छा अद्यापि महाराष्ट्र ग्रंथकारांस उत्पन्न होत नाही हे दुर्दैव होय !! एका इंग्रज ग्रंथकाराने काही वर्षापूर्वी अहिल्याबाईच्या चरित्राबद्दल असें ह्मटले आहे:-- " It is strange that so great a name as that of Ahulyabai should have no mention in the pages of Modern Indian History. India has not her historian yet, and to this circumstance may be traced much of that wrong impression which prevails respecting her song. It is good that the Hindus of Bombay are zealous in the cause of Hindu Female education; it is good that they havegiven a warm response to the suggestions of Miss Mary Carpenter; it isgood That Dr. Bhau Daji presides at the head of a female institution : but traveller and antiquarian he is, he should undertake to make roper researches and compilca Boswellian biography of the grent Mah.
