असें दिसून येते. त्यांनी महाराज सयाजीराव ह्यांस न्याप्रमाणे सशि- क्षित व सुसंस्कृत केले, त्याप्रमाणे त्यांनी आपली कन्या ताराबाबा हिच्याही शिक्षणाची काळजी घेण्यांत अंतर केले नाही. ह्या संबंधानें सर टी. माधवराव ह्यांनी, विजयानगर महाराजांच्या कन्याशाळेमध्ये, एके प्रसंगी राजमातेचे कर्तव्य सांगतांना, महाराणी जमनाबाई साहेब ह्यांची फार फार प्रशंसा केली आहे. अर्थात् सर टी. माधवराव ह्यांच्या सारख्या नामांकित मुत्सद्यांनीही ज्या सद्गुणांचा गौरव केला आहे व आनंदभराने मान डोलविली आहे, त्या सद्गुणांनी विभूषित अस- णारी 'राजमाता' कोणास पूज्य वाटणार नाही !"
- सर टी. माधवराव ह्यांच्या भाषणाचा सारांश मागें विविधज्ञान-
विस्तार ह्या मासिक पुस्तकांत प्रसिद्ध झाला होता. त्याचा उतारा रा. सा. बापट ह्यांनी ह्या चरित्रामध्ये दिला आहे. तथापि मूळचें भाषण अवश्य वाचण्यासारखे असल्यावरून त्यांतील इंग्रजी उतारा येथे सादर केला आहे:- " There is Her Highness the Maharani Jamna- bai of Baroda, Companion of the Order of the Crown of India-the adoptive mother of the reign. ing Gaekwarr of that important Native State. I cannot mention the name of this eminent lady without recalling a train of the most pleasant asso. ciations of my Buroda life. I had the privilege of Beeing Her Highness often, and of holding long and easy conversatious, with her on various topics. Iler talents and acquirements, her soundsense, her sagacity, her good temper, her exquisite sensibility, and her refineu manners inspired me with high respect and esteem. Had it not been for her steady sympathy and support as the head of the Gaekwar House, my administration of the Ba- reda State during the minority of the Maharaja would have proved much more difficult than it did. Well, Her Highness has an only daughter--a most interesting girl, beaming with beauty and intelle.
