Before the Reformation and in the Roman Catholic Church, there were eight orders of the clerks or clergy. These eight orders were divided into two classes: (A) one of inferior clerks in minor orders and employed as (1) lectors, (2) cantors, (3) acolytes (4) exorcists and (5) doorkeepers; and (B) the other of clerks in holy orders, and employed as (1) Bishops, (2) Priests or mass-thanes, (3) and Deacons.
