देशमुख १भानजी घाटगे ह्यांस, शिवाजी महाराजांचे वडील शहाजीराजे भोंसले ह्यांनी 'सर्जेराव' हा किताब दिला, असा उल्लेख केला आहे. भानजी घाटगे हे फार पराक्रमी व रणशूर पुरुष होते. ह्यांनीं, शहाजीराजे भोंसले ह्यांच्या नौकरींत असतांना, निजामशाही सरदार दुधा सर्जेराव रजपूत ह्याच्या सैन्याशीं मोठ्या मर्दुमकीनें युद्ध करून, त्याचा पराभव केला; व त्याचा खासा घोडा व सर्जा पाडाव करून आणिला. त्यावरून शहाजीराजे ह्यांनीं सुप्रसन्न होऊन त्यांस 'सर्जेराव' असें बहुमानाचें पद अर्पण केलें. ही माहिती जरी ग्राह्य मानिली, तरी शहाजीराजे ज्या अर्थीं विजापुरच्या बादशाहाच्या पदरीं नौकरीस होते, त्या अर्थीं विजापुरच्या बादशाहाकडूनच हे पद प्राप्त झालें असावें असें मानणें अधिक सयुक्तिक दिसतें. असो.

"Bhanjee Ghatgay, Deshmuk of Kagal, who was in to service of Shahajee, the father of Shivajee, the founder of Maratha empire, having encountered the forces of the Nizam Shahee Government, defeated Doodha Surjérao Rajput, and seized his horse and Surja ( the crest of the horse ), Shahajee accordingly conferred on him the title of Surjérao."-Page 302
