The name of fe is not given in the Seoni copper- plates, as the poet commences his account from ; but विंध्यशक्ति is etated in the विष्णु and some of the other पुराण's to have been the chief of the hohe 's. The passages in the विष्णु, वायु, मात्स्य and भागवतपुराण's are too corrupt to be annexed. The वायुपुराण makes प्रवरसेन the son of विध्यशक्ति and descri- bes the performance of the same sacrifices by as are noted in the Seoni plates. The incription clearly describes the king विंध्यशक्ति as belonging to the वाकाटक race, whilst the Seoni grants mention as the ornament of the race- (p. 68. ) In the Seoni plates we have the following geneology:- प्रवरसेन. रुद्रसेन. पृथ्वीसेन. प्रवरसेन. In the inscription, I recognize, in adition to f the 1st and 2nd , and his son , the three inter- vening names being lost. viz, रुद्रसेन, पृथ्वीसेन and रुद्रसेन. af and his son do not belong to a royal dynasty. In the 15th line the son, whose name is lost, is said to have become the minister of "that king", by which I presume one of the dynasty was intended. What is the meaning of कैनकिल or कैलकिल ? Sir. W. Jones's pundit thought that there was a country of this name in the south of India and that the name of a fort called fotogi in a copprplate grant was supposed to be conformatory of the Pundit's guess. १५
