७२२ Private. महात्मा फुले : समग्र वाङ्मय My dear Ramchandrarao, Bombay, 19th August 1890. Dr. Babu has already sent you Jotiba's petition and the first part of my letter about it. I now enclose completion of the letter and will thank you for a line in acknowledgement and say when you are likely to go to Baroda. I suppose you consider the petition to be all right. If any remarks in my letter about it appear objectionable, please score them out. I have written the letter because I think it needful to explain the full value of J.'s services but part of the remarks may be misconstrued by some people and so I have marked it Private. This slip, however, is only between us. The petition is inoffensively worded and its prayer can be granted on the simple ground of the man's self- sacrificing work of many years and his present needs which are real. There is thus no cause for party feeling and I am anxious that compliance with the prayer should not give the slightest ground for anybody to interpret such a concession as being due to H. H.'s leaning towards any class because the applicant in this case happens to be a Maratha. But otherwise Baroda, which has lavished its money, the fruit of the ryots toil on all sorts of Brahmans, good, bad and indifferent, may well spare some of it, on a deserving non-Brahman and one of the producing class. I plead for J. because with all his faults I think he richly deserves help. But for my premature break down I might probably have given him some small regular help, but it is no use mentioning an intention which cannot be carried out. However, the next best service I can do is to procure help for him and this is the reason why I have taken the liberty of thus interesting myself on his behalf. Private friends as I have already told you in the letter sent to you by Dr. Babu can only give temporary help. So I look to H.H. for a regular provision for the worthy pair. We are sorry to learn that Fattesing Maharaj is unwell and hope that change to Bombay will do him good. Yours sincerely, N. M. Paramanand. (3)
