प्रसंग येईल. मराठी राज्य रक्षण करण्याचें काम नानांनी केले; परंतु महादजी शिंद्यांच्या स्वार्थपरायणतेने व महत्त्वाकांक्षेने ते सिद्धीस गेलें नाहीं; असा जो सर्व साधारण आक्षेप आहे, तो पुष्कळ चुकीचा आहे, असें अस्सल कागदपत्र सिद्ध करतील असें अनुमान आहे. खरोखर, महादजी शिंद्यांच्या अकालिक मृत्यूनें मराठी साम्राज्याचा मोठाच घात झाला, व परकीय सत्तेस प्रवेश करण्यास अनायासें संधि मिळाली ह्यांत शंका नाहीं. पाटीलबावा आणखी काही दिवस जगले असते व पुणेंदरबारांतील मत्सर थोडासा नाहींसा झाला असता, तर सर्व हिंदुस्थान संयुक्त होऊन मराठ्यांचें अवाढव्य व अजिंक्य साम्राज्य पुष्कळ काल टिकलें असते ह्यांत संशय नाहीं. परंतु ईश्वरी इच्छा निराळीच असल्यामुळे पाटीलबावांच्या मृत्यूनें मराठी राज्याचा नाश लवकर घडवून आणला, असेंच ह्मटलें १पाहिजे.
१ कर्नल म्यालेसन ह्यांनी महादजी शिंदे ह्यांच्या मृत्यूबद्दल लिहितांना जे उद्गार काढिले आहेत, ते वाचण्यासारखे आहेत. ते लिहितातः-
