अपमानाबद्दल शिक्षा.

 महाराजपुरची लढाई झाल्यानंतर बायजाबाईसाहेब नासिकाहून ग्वाल्हेरीस गेल्या. नंतर बरेच दिवस त्या लष्करामध्यें फुलबागेंत राहत असत. त्यांच्या तैनातीकरितां तेथे कांटिन्जन्ट फौजेपैकीं थोडेसे लोक (a guard of honour) व त्यावरील एक नेटिव अधिकारी असे ठेवण्यांत आले होते. त्यांनी बायजाबाईंच्या स्वारीबरोबर हरहमेषा राहावें व त्यांची स्वारी कोठें बाहेर जाईल त्या वेळीं त्यांस सलामी द्यावी, असें त्यांच्याकडे काम होतें. एके प्रसंगी बाईसाहेबांच्या स्वारीची प्रतीक्षा करीत, हे लष्करी लोक फुलबागेसमोरील मैदानांत उभे राहिले; परंतु त्यांच्या स्वारीस वेळ लागल्यामुळें, त्यांच्यावरील सुभेदारसाहेब कंटाळले, आणि विश्रांतीकरितां एका खुर्चीवर जाऊन बसले. बायजाबाईसाहेबांनी चिकाच्या पडद्यांतून ही गोष्ट पाहिली; व आपली स्वारी निघण्याचे शिंग झाले असतांना, हे सुभेदारसाहेब बंदूक घेऊन सलामी देण्याकरितां तत्पर
