One woman had 4 daughters, after that she had undergone 3 abortions, she was lucky enough to conceive a baby boy on the 8th attempt. Because of regular surgeries, she had developed cancer in her womb. Despite cancer, she was happy to have conceived a boy. She was happy that she finally delivered a boy who would carry forward the name of her family. Many women had similar thinking. They were so bold in expressing their thought that was easily the mentioning the doctor who did their test, the things that he told them while doing those tests, They also told us about the religious rituals that they followed just to conceive a boy and how their god helped them by giving them an heir. In a similar case, a woman had 4 daughters and after that 3 abortions, but even after that they weren't having a male child. Her husband told us that the government should allow sex determination tests after conceiving a daughter at least or it should give 50 thousand to 1 lakh rupees per girl child to families! Their situation was unique in another sense, the wife had agreed for her husband to marry another woman just to have a baby boy, but even she couldn't give them what they wanted and after multiple abortions, the co-wife disappeared, and the first wife had to take care of another girl conceived through the cowife! At first, we were surprised about the mentality of the people in that area but later on as we scrutinised the other aspects of socioeconomical life of Shirur-Kasara, we understood the reason behind such thinking. The area was of sugarcane harvesting labourers. Almost all the couples from the Taluka, for their agricultural work, leave their home for 6-8 months to go to some factory for work. They settle in a hut or a base near the factory. They constantly change their home and because of that lack stability. They don't even ask the local government for any facilities because of the constant shifting. Nearly 8-10 lakh people migrate every year, which kills the market in this area. There is no development and there is no demand for development. There are big educational institutes
