५.२.१ वाचन : व्याख्या
वाचन ही कृती आहे की कला, ते विज्ञान आहे की प्रक्रिया, याबाबत अभ्यासक, संशोधक यांच्यामध्ये मतभिन्नता दिसून येते. वेगवेगळे विचारक, साहित्यिक, कोश इत्यादींमधूनही हे वैविध्य स्पष्ट होते. वाचनाचे स्वरूप व व्याप्ती समजून घ्यायची तर तिच्या अनेकानेक व्याख्या, परिभाषा समजून घेणे आवश्यकच नाही, तर अनिवार्य होऊन जाते. आपण त्यासाठी काही व्याख्यांचा परामर्श घेऊ.
१."Saying a written text aloud or silently. This can be done with or without understanding the content." अर्थात् लिखित मजकुराचे मूक वा प्रगट उच्चारण म्हणजे वाचन होय. हे समजून घेऊन अथवा न समजताही होत असते. लहानपणी मुले वर्ण, अक्षरे वाचतात खरे; पण ते त्यांना समजतेच असे नाही. उच्चारण, पाठांतर, समजणे, आकलन या वाचनाच्या भिन्न परी (प्रकार) होत.
२."Reading is a process undertaken to reduce uncertainty about meaning a text conveys." 2 वाचन ही लिखित मजकुराच्या अर्थाचा संभ्रम दूर करण्याची प्रक्रिया वा पद्धती होय. वाचनाने अर्थ स्पष्टतेस साहाय्य होते.
३."Reading is a complex 'cognitive process' of decoding symbols in ordered to construct or derive meaning. Reading is a means of language acquisation, communication and of sharing information and ideas."
यानुसार वाचन ही गुंतागुंतीची समजून घेण्याची रीत असून, तीनुसार आपण सांकेतिक चिन्हांचा (वर्ण, अक्षर, शब्द, वाक्य इ.) अर्थबोध भाषेच्या माध्यमातून करून घेऊन त्यांची देवाण-घेवाण करीत असतो.
४."Reading is the process of constructing meaning from written text. It is complex skill requiring the co ordination of number of interrelated sources of information."4 (Anderson et. al, 1985)
