A A ( a,a ) इंग्रजी वर्णमालिकेतील पहिले अक्षर; हे स्वर आहे. ह्याची अनेकवचनेेंं Aes, .A's As अशी लिहितात.In most of the known languages it is the first letter of the alphabet ; and it is must naturally be so as it represents the first vocal sound uttered by men with a were opening of the mouth and without any constraint or effort to alter the natural position of his lips. In the Ethiopic language it is the thirteenth letter and in the Runic, it is the tooth. The numerous sounds of A are,according to Dr. J. A. H. Murray, symbolized in the following thirteen words :--(1) name, (2)bare, (3) man, (4) father: (5) water, (6) want, (7)ant, (8) village, (9) separate, v. (10) separate, a.(11) antartic, (12) lunar, (13) authority. Some of these thirteen sounds of A, symbolized in these thirteen words, have no existence in the Marathi language and therefore no attempt is made to represent them all in Marathi characters. However some of the most common sounds of Å are अ,आ,अॅ(cat), ऑ(all), ए (long and short). २ art. एक वचनी सामान्यनामापूर्वी A किंवा An चा अनियमित उपपदाप्रमाताणे उपयोग करित; as, A man. परंतु मराठीत भाषांतर करितांना A साठी कधी 'एक' व कधी 'एखादा'असा शब्द घालितात; कधी A ह्या उपपदाबद्दल मराठीत कांहींच शब्द योजीत नाहीत; as, a man ह्मणजे 'एक मनुष्य, एखादा मनुष्य' किंवा फक्त 'मनुष्य.' ३ एक (श्रेष्ठत्वदर्शक); as, He is a hero-तो एक मोठा वीर आहे. ४ mus. सहावा स्वर- ( The 6th note of the 6th note of the diatonic scale of C. Major.५ naut ह्यापुढचा A 1 हा शब्द पहा. ६ Eng. log. अन्वयव्याप्तिसिद्धान्त,सत्सार्थक सर्वव्यापी सिद्धान्त; as, All men are mortal is an A proposition. ७ law. &c. &c. कोणतीही वस्तू- मनुष्य; as, A is a security to B. केलेल्या विशेषनामापूर्वी A हे उपपद लावितात; as, A Daniel has come to judgment. ११ संख्यावाचक विशेषनामापुर्वी चा उपयोग कधींं कधीं 'सुमारें, जवळ' ह्या अर्थी होतो; as, A six years सुमारे सहा वर्षे. १२ (a) प्रत्येक, एकेक, हर, दर, प्रति; as, 100 Rs. a year; and before nouns in the objective case A does not appear in the Marathi rendering and only the casal terminationस, &c., is added to the nouns, as, 5 Rs. a man माणसास पांच रूपये. १३ Various senses of A as a prefix : (a) पूर्णतादर्शक (equivalent to up); as, Awake = wake up साफ जागेंं होणे. (b) पासून; as, Adown= from the down (hill) वरून (टेंंकडीवरून) खाली. (c) कडे (contr. of ad, to); as, Ascend =climb upwards, or upto वरच्या भागाकडे चढणे. (d) पासून, दूर (contr.
of ab, away); as, Averse = turned away from पासून
परामुुख. (e) आंतून बाहेर (contr. of e or ex); as,
Amend = To free from a fault दोषांतून बाहेर काढणें, दोषमुक्त करणे, सुधारणे. (f) निषेध-अभाव दर्शक; as, Amorphous = of no regular' form अष्टस्फटिकाकारभिन्न, अनियताकार. (g) वर; as, afoot-on foot पायीं. १४ चा (contr. of of); as, A clock=of the clock १५ On, in आणि at ह्या अव्ययांचा अपभ्रंश;as, anight, aback, away &c., &e. This sense of A is expressed in Marathi by various prepositions or by suitable inflections of the words. Important words of this class of adverbs are given in their proper places in the Dictionary: १६ A, as a noun, is generally rendered by अ and आ or by अकार and आकार in the masculine gender. All the letters when treated as nouns are regarded as masculine and are rendered either simply as उ, ऊ, क, का, प, पा &c., or in combination with the suffix
