To increase the utility of the book, the Editor first intended to give the pronunciations in Marathi but when he travelled in the several parts of the Maharashtra to gather public opinion on this point, scholars like Dr. R. G. Bhandarkar M. A., PH. D., C. I. E., (LL.D.); K. B. Marathe Esqr.,M. A; LL.B.; V. N. Pathak Esqr., M.A.; V. M. Mahajani Esqr., M.A. and a few others have advised him to give the pronunciations in English, as this is a work not intended for little children and as no settled scheme of representing English sounds in Marathi characters has as yet been fixed upon and accepted by these who are responsible for the elementary English education of boys. The learned Doctor was also kind enough to extend to the Editor the privilege of a few hours' discussion on some of the words in the letter A (Accident, Angle, Anomaly, Art and Axis), approved of some of the new coinages, and advised him to exercise great care in giving Sanskrit origins of English words. K. B. Marathe Esqr also has promised to revise some of the lists of Technical words as he had himself to coin some new words in Marathi while translating some Science Primers in the Macmillan's Series. V. M. Mahajani Esqr. was kind enough to spend about three hours of his valuable time in reading a few words from the letter A and to make some valuable suggestions with regard to the general plan of the work. He also brought to the notice of the Editor the necessity of adding longer explanations to some words and terms such as a posteriori, a priori, Ave, To cleanse the Augean stables, &c. &c. He also suggested विचारैकद्वारा, उन्नयन, अवनयन as his renderings of A priori, Induction and Deduction. V. N. Pathak Esqr. most warmly expressed his sympathy with the present attempt, read some words in the letter A, approved them and promised his double support of money and literary advice to tho Editor.

Before settling the plan of this work, the Editor received valuable suggestions from Principal R. R. Kale B. A., Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Esqr., B.A., LL.B., Hari Ganesh Karmarkar Esqr. and several others whose names will be given in the general preface. On the advice of some of these the Editor has incorporated in the work certain English words now Marathicized, such as:- प्लेग,स्टेशन, रेल्वे, ट्रॅम्बे, टेबल,इस्टेट, इंजिन, मेलगाडी, पोस्ट, कलेक्टर, बिशप,तिकीट, सर्वे,नंबर, बुक, बोट, कोर्ट, बटन, कॉफी, पेन्सिल, कोट,हायकोर्ट, जज्ज, अपील, केस, वॉरंट, समन्स, टाइप, गव्हर्नर, बूट, युनिव्हर्सिटी, कॉलेज, पार्लमेंट, ॲफीडेव्हिट, फी, लार्ड, following in the footsteps of English lexicographers who have adopted into the English language many of the Indian words, such as- अवतार, अमृत, कर्म, प्रात्कन, बाबू, तमाशा, बंदोबस्त, समजाब, बक्षीस, गादी, अत्तर, पालखी, रयत, etc., etc. Such a step is essentially necessary for the growth of a language and exactly the same view was advocated by perhaps the greatest master of the Marathi Prose, the late Vishnu Shastri Chiplunkar.

The results of the fast-progressing Science of Philology, though now in its infancy, have boon availed of in coining new words; for instance -Apetallous (अ-पटल ), Atheism ( अ-देवत्व), Agastric (अ-जठर), Agonic (अ-कोनिक).

A Dictionary must supply words as far as possible for persons of all grades of Society and suited to all different contexts. And therefore the Editor has made an attempt to give, as far as possible, the various renderings suited to different contexts; for instance, सहगमन करणें will be the right rendering of the verb “to Accompany" in the sentence “The widow accompanied her husband to the funeral pile," and in no other context.

It may be that a word newly coined by two or three experts may be found fault with a inaccurate by a fourth one. This fourth expert will offer his own coinage as an improvement, forgetting all along that there will be others who will find similar fault with his own creation. But if the future progress of the Marathi language in the many new Departments of Western Science and Art is to be expedited, the leading Marathi writers in the Maharashtra must all unite in minting words which will be universally accepted in the British Maharashtra and its colonies in India. What happens at present is that every new writer arbitrarily mints his own technical terms not taking pains to see what his predecessors in the same department have done. It is easy to say for one that a certain word is not an accurate rendering of its corresponding English word; but if this very objector is requested to make his own suggestion and from every point of view & faultless one, he often finds himself unable to do it and then at once gives in his adhesion to the old pronosol. The Editor does not make bold to say that the numerous Marathi equivalents for their corresponding
