'A' namely A posteriori and A priori have been approved of by these two students of Philosophy. In this connection, Prof. H. M. Bhadkamkar's services are invaluable in finding out parallel words from the old Hindu Philosophy.

In the Departments of Carpentry, Building, Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Drawing, Perspective, Practical Geometry, the contributions of Woman Purushottam Date Esqr., Pandurang Purushottam Date Esqr., Haripant Kamat Esqr., Mahadev Balkrishna Tambat Esqr. L. M. E, Anantrao Paranjpe Esqr. are really great and this Department of the Dictionary is now placed under the inspection of Hari Vishnu Lele Esqr. L.C.E.

Anant Vaman Barve Esqr. and Mudhavrao Narayan Patankar Esqr. have promised to supply at least one hundred words pertaining to Drama and Stage. Some specimens of words in this Department are:-Drop-scene मुखपट,पहिला पडदा, दर्शनी पडदा; Wings पार्श्वपट,वाजवा; Foot-light तलप्रकाश,तळचे दिवे, खालचे दिवे; Re-hearsal प्रयोगशिक्षा,तालीम; Dress-rehearsal रंगाची तालीम, नेपथ्यप्रयोग; Wig टोप; Cover आवरणपट, आडपडदा; Blind छायापडदा, छायापट; Scene दर्शन, देखावा; Green Room रंगपट, रंगशीर्ष, रंगाची खोली, नेपथ्यशाला.

R. P. Nandurbarkar Esqr. has kindly given about fifty words pertaining to Press. Some specimens of words in this Department are :-Case ठशांचे पाळे, वर्णमुद्रापात्र; Lead शिसपट्टी; Rule पितळपट्टी; Founder मुद्राकार; Composition ठसेजुळणी, मुद्रेकीकरण; Distribution ठसे सोडविणे,ठशाची विल्हेवारी,मुद्रापृथक्करण,मुद्रविभाजन ; Proof खडी; Correction शोधन, शुद्ध करणें; Quotation बृहस्पूरक ; space पूरक; Thick space महापूरक; Middle space मध्यमपूरक; Thin space सूक्ष्मपूरक &c.

In the departments of Marathi Idiom and Grammar, the services of Vinayak Konddeo Oak Esqr., Narayan Krishan Gadre Esqr., Doreshwar Vasudeo Karve Esqr., Shridher Narayan Datar Esqr. have added much to the value of the work. In this connection may be mentioned the valuable suggestions of Keshav Vaman Pethe Esqr. with regard to the subject of Marathi Orthography.

REVISION-COMMITTEES.

Two Revision-Committees, one at Amaraoti and one at Yeotmal, have carefully examined the galley-proofs of the letter B and a part of C. The names of the members of these committees will be mentioned later on when their work will be advanced into “final." Similar Committees are being organised at other centres and on the whole the work will undergo & revision by about two hundred graduates, each examining carefully a few pages only. Thus it appears that the present work, which is the product of the labours of many graduates and not a commercial speculation, is a distinct contribution to English-Marathi scholarship and a positive service to the cultivation and enrichment of the Marathi language.

The Editor hopes to write a general preface to the work when completed and among other matters it will include essays on the following :-(1) Contributions of the Studies of Sanskrit and English during the last three generations to the development of the Marathi language. (2) Campama tive Grammar of English and Marathi. (3) Marathi Orthography. (4) English as the portal to all modern learning. (5) Sanskrit origins of English words.

The Editor begs to say, that before putting his hand to the present task, he has carefully studied the History of English Lexicography, its dim beginnings in the glosses of Monks and Priests, its various stages such as-Latin-English Vocabularies, English-Latin Vocabularies, Dictionaries of English and another Modern Language, Glossaries and Dictionaries of 'hard' English words, Bailey's Extension of these glossaries, Dr. Johnson's Standard Dictionary, further developments of the same by Webster, Richardson, Trench and the epoch-marking Dictionary of Dr. Murray. This last-named work can be called a wonder of the present age, illustrating best the spirit of cooperation among Englishmen for improvement of their language.

The Public may perhaps form an idea of the arduous nature of the labours of the Editor from the following. Sometimes he had to waste several hours and spend comparatively a good deal to get possession of certain rare books such as-Dr. Narayan Daji's Work on Materia Medica, Dr. Kunte's Work on Midwifery, old numbers of the धन्वंतरी magazine, etc., etc. Sometimes days had to be spent in getting a trace of the right books in Marathi on several subjects. Sometimes weeks were
