Distinguish Fable, Fiction, Fabrication, Parable, Allegory, Novel, Romance. Fable is a feigned tale conveying some lesson of instruction. A fable mentions talking trees, talking animals, unhistoric & unreal personages. Fiction is any production of the imagination. Its aim is amusement or instruction or both. Fiction is opposed to what is real as fabrication is opposed to what is true. The common end of fiction is to entertain, that of fabrication is to mislead and deceive. A Parable is an illustration of moral or spiritual truth through vehicle of natural or secular processes or occurrences. The parable teaches truth for itself. An Allegory differs both from fable and parable in that the properties of persons are fictitiously represented as attached to things to which they are as it were transferred. A Novel is a fiction with something of dramatic plot in it designed to show the working of human passion and is such that in themselves there is no impossibility in the incidents of it. The Romance is a novel which deals in surprising and adventurous incidents in order to strike by means of the marvelous without the historic probability of the novel of the present day. (Culled from Smith). We thus propose the following accurate renderings:-- Fable=(बोधपर) कल्पित कथा किंवा गोष्ट. Fiction = कल्पित रचना किंवा प्रबंध. Fabrication=बनावट, खोटे असेल ते खरें भासविणे. Parable=(व्यवहारांत किंवा सृष्टीत घडून येणान्या) खन्या गोष्टींचा दृष्टांत किंवा दाखला. Allegory = परंपरित रूपक, or loosely रूपक. Allegory is not दृष्टान्त. Novel = कादंबरी. Romance = अद्भुत कादंबरी. N. B.-Fabulous = कल्पित. False = खोटें.
