Either (1'-ther ) [ M. E. eithe;—A. S. cgther, contracted from ceghwaether, compounded of a --ayc, the pref. ge & hwacther = whether). a. mon. one of 1200, the one on the viher (properly used of two things, but sometimes of a larger number, for any one ) दोहोंपैकी एक, दोहोंपैकी पहिला किंवा दुसरा, अन्यतर (S.), एकतर (S. ). Either' ह्या शब्दाची योजना दोहोंपैकी एक अशा अर्थाच बहुधा करितात, पण क्वचित् दोहोंपेक्षा ज्यास्त संख्या उद्दिष्ट असतांही either या शब्दाचा प्रयोग आढळतो. व त्या वेळेस त्याचा अर्थ (पैकी) कोणीही एक' असा होतो; जसे, "Scarce a palm of ground could be gotten by either of the three.” R cach of the two or both (formerly, telso, each of any number) दोहोंपैकी प्रत्येक, दोन्ही, दोनही, दोघे; as, “ His flowing hair in curls on either cheek played.” E. conj. Either precedes two, or more, co-ordinate words or phrases, and is introductory to an alternative. It is correlative to or. पक्षांतराची विवक्षा असतां पहिल्या पक्षाच्या आरंभी either' व दुसन्या पक्षाच्या आरंभी or हे शब्द योजितात, व अशा रीतीने either' व 0 हीं अव्यये परस्परसंबंधी असतात; as, "Either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey; or peradventure he sleepeth.
n. B.--Few writers hesitate to use either in what is called it triple alternative; such as, “We must either stay where we are, proceed or recede." Either was fornierly sometimes used without any correlation, and where we should now use or.
