For the literary section, the monumental works of Molesworth and Candy form the ground-work upon which this Dictionary has been built. But as a language grows, now words are introduced and many old ones fall out of use. All words and expressions, that have become obsolete during the last two quarters of a century and words of foreign extraction that have not become naturalized in the Marathi language, have been omitted. Many new English words have been incorporated in the Dictionary to make it a practical and an up-to-date companion to renders of newspapers and magazines, and a reliable work of reference to readers of literature, which has acquired a tendency to become scientific in respect of its phraseology.
The best authorities have been consulted for pronunciation and etymology of words included in this book; and the latest researches in the department of philology have been availed of.
The Scientific section contains numerous vernacular equivalents for corresponding English terms in Higher Algebra, Trigonometry, Conic Sections, Analytical Conics, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Statics, Dynamics, and Hydrostatics; in elementary and advanced portions of Mathematical Astronomy; in Astrology; in Physics; in Chemistry ( Inorganic only); in Biology including Botany and Zoology; in Geology; in Medicine; in Mechanical Engineering and Mill Industry; in Sociology including History, Politics, Political Economy, etc.
These vernacular scientific terms are either Sanskrit primitives, or Sanskrit derivatives, or compounds of simple Sanskrit words; such scientific and technical terms, in English, are either primitives or derivatives or compounds from Latin and Greek.
It is this section of the Scientific Terminology, which will prove useful to all the vernaculars of Aryan or Dravidian origin, which are poor in their literatures in the department of European Science and Art.
1. The first attempt was made several years ago by an important Native State in this presidency. It died a premature death.
2. The second attempt was made by the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad of Bengal. It, too, died & premature death.
3. The third attempt was made by the Nagari Pracharini Sabha of Benares. But it was confined to seven branches of Science only. I was on the Editorial Committee, the Revision Committee and the Special Committees to fix & Hindi Scientific Terminology.* On these Com.
