आपल्या २० मार्चच्या अंकात या आंदोलनाचे राजकीय महत्त्व विशद करताना 'इंडियन एक्स्प्रेस'चे एक पत्रकार देविंदर शर्मा यांनी आपल्या लेखात म्हटले,
That the Bharatiya Kisan Union has emerged as a major force to reckon with in Punjab becomes evident from the manner in which the Akali Dal felt perturbed over the massive show of strength. Since the BKU had politely turned down Akali Dal's offer of support, the Dal had to issue a statement supporting the farmers' movement 'unilaterally'. Whether the farmers' movement has eroded the Akali rural base is still not clear but it is certain that the state's peasantry is more concerned about their own economic problems than the political and religious demands. The farmers' leaders, unlike politicians, stayed along with the farmers during the picketing of Raj Bhavan. This itself is enough to seek mass support from the ruralites. (भारतीय किसान युनियन ही पंजाबमधील एक मोठी दखलपात्र शक्ती म्हणून उदयाला आली आहे. युनियनने केलेल्या शक्तिप्रदर्शनामुळे ज्याप्रकारे अकाली दल पक्ष अस्वस्थ झाल्याचे दिसते, त्यावरून ही बाब अगदी स्पष्ट आहे. अकाली दलाने देऊ केलेला पाठिंबा बीकेयुने नम्रपणे नाकारला होता व त्यामुळे अकाली दलाला आंदोलनासाठी आपला 'एकतर्फी' पाठिंबा जाहीर करावा लागला. शेतकरी आंदोलनामुळे अकाली दलाचा ग्रामीण भागातील पाया पोखरला गेला आहे का, हे अद्याप स्पष्ट झाले नसले तरी, राज्यातील शेतकऱ्यांना धार्मिक अथवा राजकीय मागण्यांपेक्षा स्वतःचे आर्थिक प्रश्न अधिक जवळचे वाटतात हे नक्की झाले आहे. राजभवनवरील निदर्शनांच्या वेळी शेतकरीनेते स्वतःही शेतकऱ्यांबरोबरच मुक्काम
